Dave and Maureen Sagrati started their family-owned business in 1974 by opening a beer distributor. At that time there were very few micro-brewed beers, and imports were available mostly on the East coast. Dave started seeking out new brands of beer, and before long he had over 300 different brands in their distributor.
Beer distributors in Pennsylvania could only sell full cases, and Dave knew that customers were reluctant to buy a full case of a beer that they never heard of. So in 1994, the Sagratis opened a six-pack store (Six N Save), and started selling imports and craft beers by the single bottle. Customers loved trying new beers one at a time and things really began to take off.
In 2006, they moved to a larger store, put in an 18-door visa cooler and allowed customers to mix six- packs of beer at a great price. Dave kept searching for new brews and constantly increasing the number of brands available. In December 2009, they changed the name to House of 1000 Beers to better reflect the true image of the business.
The new location featured a bar with 12 great beers on tap – but that was quickly expanded to 30! Their next project is to add a cask beer delivery system. The House of 1000 Beers has a Draft Beer Club and a Bottle Club with over 1,400 happy members.
The House has the largest selection of Belgian beers in Western PA, soon to reach 200 different brands.
